Tweet, tweet. Twitter terms are cute, but so what? I’ve read a lot about how to use Twitter effectively, but I still don’t get it. I just don’t care for hourly updates, even from experts. I mean, no one can be THAT interesting all the time.
I try to practice good Twitter etiquette. If someone follows me, I’ll follow them back. I will also send them a direct message, thanking them for the follow and asking what they do. More often than not, I get no response. I then get inundated with meaningless dribble; these folks delight in posting updates every few minutes all day long. Don’t they have lives? I’m sorry if they’re lonely and looking for a online friends.
Companies are also into Twitter big time. I can’t think of any product that is so exciting and fun that I’d want constant updates about it. Sure I love all things related to fitness, but I don’t want to read what my favorite instructor had for breakfast.
I think I’ll stick to blogging, Facebook and LinkedIn for now.

I couldn’t agree more. Try though I might, I just can’t seem to “get it.” So far, the only Twitter account that I’ve found interesting and useful is CNN’s.

@Joyce – thanks for your comment. I will check out the CNN twitter account, although I usually get my news from an RSS feed on my home page.

It’s not that big of a deal if you don’t get Twitter. Like a lot of things, it has to be a good “fit” in order to be an effective communications tool – either as a sender or receiver.
One thing I don’t understand though, is why you would follow someone just because they are following you. If there is no solid reason to follow someone, then why do it? Perhaps you’re just not following the right people. =/
I don’t follow everyone that follows me. I’ve even banned people because they aren’t relevant or they are site spammers who followed me just to get me to visit their site.
Twitter is just a communications game. It’s not for everyone.

@Mister Reiner – thanks for your insights on Twitter. I agree that Twitter is just a tool, and like any other tool, it may or may not be a good fit. Good question about who to follow. Before I decide to follow someone, I look at their Twitter info, as well as doing a Google search on them. If they look interesting, I’ll follow them. There are several people that I don’t bother following because they’re obviously spammers or just not that interesting to me. I guess I need to dig a little deeper though.

Have you tried multiple Twitter accounts?
I have six accounts that I check every day. Each Twitter account is like a news feed. My accounts are set up to collect information on special interests: opera, pianists, electronic music, and ECM Records. I don’t post very much from these accounts but I sometimes re-tweet items of interest.

@Paul – interesting idea on the multiple Twitter accounts. You are very organized. It’s all I can do to keep up with my multiple email accounts :). I guess I can see how multiple accounts make it easier to view items of interests. Seems like an easier way to organize Twitter stuff, instead of using Twitter lists and an application like Tweet Deck.
On the other hand, it seems that it is just more stuff to check. If I ever decide to get more into Twitter, I may re-visit this.

@Sajib – thanks for your thoughts on Twitter. A lot of people feel the way you do about Twitter. There’s nothing like it for real-time updates.
