The lazy days of summer are upon us. I got to thinking about the summer and how I love it. I am ever more appreciative this year because of everything that is going on.
Here’s why I love summer:
1. Many hours of daylight.
I am a morning person and I love to exercise in the morning. That being said, it sure is hard to get up at 4:30 am in the winter. It’s dark and it’s cold and it feels like the middle of the night. In the summer, it’s getting light out at 4:30 am so it is much easier to get up.
I find that I have more energy in the afternoon as well.
2. I’m more in tune with my body.
I am a big believer in intuition. Our ‘gut’ tells us things, we don’t always listen though. Since I feel more relaxed, I am better able to be still and listen to my body. I am evolving from a Ballet/Barre routine to an all yoga routine. Yoga and stretching is just what my body needs right now. Since Mr. Ken has injured his shoulder, kayaking is not in the cards for a bit. I have been enjoying early morning walks.
3. It’s easier to eat healthy.
There are so many yummy fruits in season, it’s hard to decide which ones to eat each day. Having all this fruit goes a long way to curbing my sweet tooth. On a side note, there are no Peep holidays in the summer, so it is easier for me to resist sweets. Although the siren call of the Dairy Queen Blizzard is hard to resist.
4. Kayaking.
What can I say? I love kayaking more than anything. I can be having the most stressful day, but once I’m out on the water, all of that disappears. I always sleep wonderfully after being outside all day.
5. Chipmunks!
It’s so much fun to come downstairs every day and have chipmunks sitting on our front and back steps, waiting for their breakfasts. They love blueberries! I think because they are sweet and a perfect size for them.
6. Dairy Queen Blizzards.
I love Dairy Queen Blizzards even more than Peeps. We had to change our routine this year though, since our favorite Dairy Queen has relocated. Thanks to a tip from the owner of our favorite deli, we now enjoy yummy frozen yogurt from the local Mobile station. I’m partial to the salted caramel. And, to make things even better, there are lots of toppings to choose from. We can have anything from M&Ms, to heath bar, to sprinkles.
So what are some of your favorite summer things?

Hi Masum,
Thanks for your comment – do you not like the heat? I have friends that much prefer the
cooler days of fall since they have more energy.

No I don’t like hot weather as it makes me sweaty all day long. I think winter is great, by winter in our country it means not less than 10 degree Celcius temperature, which is not extreme cold.

I love to be outdoors too! Working in our community garden gives me that time as well as time to talk to my fellow gardeners. It also provides a fresh supply of organic tomatoes, cilantro and jalapeños for summer salsa.

Hi Judy,
Gardening is a wonderful way to spend summer days. I gave up on gardening ever since the beetles came and overnight ate everything I had planted!

Arrgh! 4:30 am? neither in winter or in summer for me! I agree about the fresh fruit. Anyway, this year is bizarre, I just hope we make it down to Puglia in August for at least a week.

Hi Bea,
I hope you are able to get away this summer! It is looking like our trip to Vermont will be canceled since Vermont is limiting visitors from states with high COVID cases. Unfortunately, Massachusetts is one of those states. Our numbers are going down, but they are still high.
Oh well, there is always next year to look forward to.

Didn’t realise Massachusetts had high numbers. I’m trying to follow all the news from the US, and I do hope things get better soon for all of you.

Hi Bea,
Yes, for the past 3 months, Massachusetts has been at the forefront of national news as a “COVID hot spot.” The good news is that we have a very good governor who took a very conservative approach to managing COVID and we are seeing the good from that, we now have the lowest rate of new COVID cases in the U.S.
Now some of the Southern states like Florida and Texas are seeing an explosion of cases. They did not do any of the things that have been proven to slow the spread, e.g. shelter at home, close all but essential businesses, make wearing a mask in public mandatory. These states are paying the price now.
Argh, I wonder if COVID will ever disappear from the U.S.

Good you have done what we have here in Italy – though like us, a bit belatedly. And hoping they eventually do the same elsewhere in the US…
