I love how my blog ideas come to me through my everyday activities. This post came out of a simple question from my husband, “Do you hit “like” for Facebook Fan pages?”
My first response was, “No way, I have no interest in big companies and their products. They only want me to “like” their pages so they can gather my personal data and then force ads on me. It has nothing to do with making a personal connection with me.
On second thought, I realized that there are several company pages that I like:
Utimate Yogi – This yoga series literally changed my life. I want to support Travis Eliot, the creator. Plus, I love being a part of a community of fellow yoga enthusiasts.
Cathe – aka Cathe Friedrich, my fitness idol. She’s the one who got me into strength training.
Yes, these are “fan pages,” but it’s really the person that I love.
The good:
* a community of like-minded enthsiasts
* a real sense of personal connection to the business owner
The not so good:
* I had joined several Beachbody pages, but I was getting inundated with messages from so-called Beachbody coaches, trolling for clients and looking to sell Beachbody products. Yes, they were legitimate people, but with a selling agenda.
What about you? Are you a fan of any Facebook pages?

When I was on Facebook, the only pages I liked were those administered by my friends and family. Regarding data mining – everything you do, even just visiting a page without liking it, is collected by Facebook. I left Facebook many months ago and have never looked back.

Hi,
Thanks for chiming in with your thoughts about Facebook. I am about ready to leave Facebook as well. Initially, I got a lot of traffic for my blog there, but that isn’t the case any more. I am in personal contact with my close friends, so I don’t need Facebook for that.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Facebook over the next few years.

I only “Like” fan pages that I really, truly like, which are few. I have mostly “Liked” fan pages for businesses that are run by friends or former classmates. I am trying to use Facebook constructively to stay in touch with people I care about. Perhaps constructive use of Facebook is a bit of an oxymoron? It can be such a HUGE time waster if you’re not careful.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for joining the conversation about Facebook. I think that Facebook, more so than any other Social Media tool, has the greatest potential to be a big time waster.

Hello Nancy,
Great question! I only joined fb when I started my blog last summer. At first, I thought I’d really been missing out on staying connected with coworkers and old friends. Now, at the 7-month point, I can honestly say (with very few informative/interesting exceptions) that it is a rather empty resource. Also, it’s somewhat depressing to witness how little so many appear to have to occupy their time…Yikes!

Hi Luggagelady,
Thanks so much for chiming in with your thoughts about Facebook. Your experience is quite typical. I see several posts an hour by my Facebook “friends,” who are supposedly gainfully employed. I just wonder how much work they are doing if they can find time to post so much on Facebook.

Creating a Facebook page is easy, but devoting your time to the page is not something that everyone wants to do. I think interacting with bloggers is more fun.
Blogging is the Facebook of the intellects!
