I was over at my Mom’s house this past week, like I am every day. She gets a lot of catalogs. Since I had some time to kill, I started looking through the Vermont Country Store catalog. This brought me back in time for a number of reasons.
First of all, Mr. Ken and I have taken many lovely vacations in Vermont. One of our first stops was always the Vermont Country Store. It’s like entering an old fashioned general store. I could spend hours in there, just wandering around.
As I was paging through the catalog, one thing really stood out, wax carolers. Oh, did this bring me back! When I was growing up we had an entire choir of these carolers, including props, like a light post. Sadly, they all melted together one year when we mistakenly stored them in the attic.
I remember those loooong days of December, when I couldn’t wait for Christmas to arrive. My friend Elaine and I used to sing carols in front of the front door spotlight. What a sight we must have been!
I ordered the carolers and now have them proudly displayed on my dining room table (see above.)
What happy Christmas (or holiday) memories have been triggered for you?

Your carolers look lovely! My “real” Christmas memories are from years past too, all tied in with cold and snow, from childhood years in Austria or skiing holidays. So Christmas trees bring to mind season’s carols… in German 🙂

Nancy, by sheer coincidence I was talking to hubby the other night about how Mother and I used to spend lots of time leafing through catalogues (especially gardening ones) and having great fun ordering stuff and waiting for it to arrive. It was a real winter activity. Somehow catalogues just aren’t the same now that she isn’t there to share the whole experience with but your post brought all the warmth of it back and I’m smiling here as I remember some of the crazy things we ordered!

Hi Jean,
I am so glad this post brought back some happy memories for you! It’s funny, isn’t it how those memories can just pop into our heads at the most unexpected times.

I like the little carolers. I can remember having similar ones in our family when I was a kid. It put a smile on my face to see them again and think back to my childhood days around Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you and your family Nancy! I hope your mom is doing well. My mom used to make hot chocolate for us in these special silver goblets she had for many years. Then we would all read the Christmas story together… Great memories.

Hi Tony,
And a very Merry Christmas to you and yours too!
Nancy
P.S. I haven’t forgotten about reviewing your book. My project work is keeping me really busy. I just hate it when work gets in the way of fun stuff like reviewing. 🙂

I remember going to the Vermont Country Store in Fairlee VT, across the river from Hanover NH. I loved those New England stores that just went on and on, with everything you could possibly think of, and still selling many tried and true things of yesteryear.
I send to you my bountiful blessing for this hopeful new year.
