How blogging saved my career

 how blog saves career

Every once in a while you do something that has an unexpected, yet huge impact on your life. As I look to switch my career focus to marketing and writing, blogging has helped me in so many ways.

Here’s how blogging has saved my career:

1. Brought back discipline.
When you are out of work and trying to find a new job, the lack of a regular schedule can be a killer. I know what I need to do to find my next opportunity, but it’s all to easy to get side tracked by other, more fun and interesting things like kayaking or hiking.

I write blog posts at least once a week. At first this was tough to manage. I was worried that I would run out of things to write about. I was worried that no one would read my blog and the list goes on. Now, it’s second nature for me to write the posts. I actually look forward to Saturday afternoons when I do my blog post drafts.

2. Rebuilt self-esteem.
Looking for a job is not for the faint of heart. When I don’t do well on an interview, or get rejected for a job, the negative thoughts rush in. I’m a loser. No one wants to hire me. I’ll never get a job and end up as a bag lady.

The more I blog, the better I feel. I know I’m building my skills in writing, marketing, and technology.

3. Sparked creativity.
With a BA in Mathematics and Biology and an MBA, I had always defined myself as an analytical person. As I delve more into writing and marketing, my creative side is slowly emerging. Who would have thought that the project plan queen turn out like this?

I look at the world with new eyes, ever alert for my next blog topic. The idea for this post came to me as I was driving to get my flu shot. My last post on How hiking has improved my marketing skills, came to me as I nearing the summit of Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire.

4. Kept me up to date with the latest technology.
I would probably have kept up with technology anyway, since I love it. Blogging with WordPress software is perfect for me. I learn best by identifying a business need and then finding a technology application to fill that need.

I’m constantly learning new social media tools too.

What have you always wanted to do? What steps can you take right now to move you towards that goal? You never know what new opportunities will open up for you.
