Creating Facebook Fan Page

So you’ve decided that a Facebook fan page is the way to go. Now what? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Set your goals.
What do you wish to accomplish with your fan page? To you want to educate? To Entice? To engage?

2. Be consistent across all media.
If you want to be branded as a young hip company, then every online presence should reflect this. Include your logo on your fan page. Be aware however, that rectangular-shaped logos don’t look very good. Square or circular logos are best.

3. No self-promotion.
Nothing will turn off consumers faster than shameless self-promotion. Strive to educate and don’t just make it about your products. For example, if you’re a hair salon, feature quick tips on hair care, not a plug for your salon.

4. Make it two-way.
Encourage discussion among your fans. Pose interesting and fun questions. Offer prizes for the best answer. Anything you can do to engage your audience is good.

5. Create a schedule for updating your Fan Page.
For content to be effective, it has to be fresh. It’s okay to update just once a week, but make sure you’re consistent.

6. Use multiple media.
Mix things up by adding videos, pictures and notes.

7. Have fun!
The beauty of social media, especially Facebook fan pages, is that it’s easy to create content. It’s also pretty easy to see how effective it is by the comments. If it doesn’t work, try something else!

Coca Cola and Starbucks are two particularly effective fan pages. While you probably don’t have the budget these companies do, it’s helpful to look at what they’ve created to get ideas.
