I try to approach each day with joy, gratitude and an open heart. It really makes a difference! Even the most mundane of errands can turn into a happy experience. I had an especially nice experience the other day.
I got out of my car in the local Trader Joe’s parking lot and next to me, a gentleman was also getting out of his car. He smiled at me and said, “It sure is a nice day, isn’t it?” Now we New Englanders have hearts of gold, but we aren’t necessarily friendly at first. So I replied to this gentleman, “Yes it is. I try to enjoy every day, no matter what happens.” We got into the most interesting discussion about being optimists. It turns out he is a Vietnam Vet. I, of course, thanked him for his service to our Country.
As we went our separate ways, I was smiling and thinking, “what a nice, positive way to start the day.”
Now, I am in Trader Joe’s, which you all know is my favorite store. I ran into one of my friends, Chris, who works in the store. We have bonded over trading stories about our injured shoulders. I had recommended my physical therapists to Chris. Chris, upon seeing me, ran over to me and effusively said, “Nancy, thank you so much for recommending your physical therapists to me. They are great and they are really, really helping me rehab my shoulder.” Chris then gave me an apple tart as a thank you.
I got home with a happy heart. Those two conversations really made my day.

Nancy, this is lovely. I have a happy story to share: In September, I was running through a neighborhood and stopped to look at the flowers at this house I’ve always admired – the garden is incredible. A woman happened to be out working on the flowers so I stopped and told her how much I enjoy passing by and admiring the garden. Well, we had a LONG conversation that included us discovering we were both avid swimmers, and she gave me a tour of the back garden which was really incredible. Last month I stopped to visit her again when my mom was in town, and she gave us BOTH a tour of the back garden. Just delightful.

Two satisfying conversations, a happy heart & an apple tart to return home with – what an outing! Particularly in this crazy time, I’ve noticed that people tend to walk about hunkered over, eyes on the ground. Even greetings are not offered as often anymore when I am out on my runs. To be able to engage in conversation really is a treasure!
