In June, Mr. Ken and I took a trip to the fair state of New Jersey to attend Ken’s College Reunion. We had a blast visiting old haunts and seeing old friends.
One may not think of New Jersey as a food lover’s paradise, but it was for us. One thing New Jersey is famous for is its diners. We spent a lovely afternoon in Chester, New Jersey.
Chester, NJ,ย began as “Black River” at the crossing of Native American trails and became a prosperous agricultural community known for apples and later for mining iron ore in the late 1800s.ย In the 20th century, the town transformed into a suburban retreat and is now a historic tourist destination with a picturesque Main Street and preserved buildings.ย
We ate at the Chester Diner. Not only was the food delicious, but the interior was cool, with this neat lighting.
Chester is very quaint, but my favorite store was the Chester Candy Store, especially since I have a wicked sweet tooth.
When I went inside the store, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. ๐ There were so many types of candy to choose from.
Here’s the stash. I got many types of jelly beans, gummies and hard candy. Yum!
Life wasn’t all about candy. We even stopped at a farm stand on our way back to where we were staying. Yes, they do have farms in New Jersey. It is not all built up. The strawberries were literally picked that morning and they were delicious.
Aside from diners, New Jersey has some delicious Chinese Food. We of course had to pay a visit to our favorite Chinese restaurant, Hunan Spring, located in Springfield, New Jersey. Here is Mr. Ken enjoying his meal. The best part of the meal is the fried noodles. Um, they aren’t the healthiest things on this planet, but they sure do taste good. ๐
So what food adventures had you had lately?

On Aug 22 this year my wife and I were fortunate to be invited to an after-wedding (performed in California) reception at a restaurant in Asbury Park, NJ. Most of both of our families still live in NJ, so we were lucky to join both sides on this occasion at the Stella Marina Restaurant on the boardwalk. About 80 people were treated to an open bar with a 3-course meal. 1st course– calamari fritti, eggplant parmigiana, and meatballs polpettini. 2nd– Caesar salad and rigatoni vodka. 3rd– choice of scaloppini of veal, chicken breast marinara, or grilled filet mignon. A ton of pastries, cookies and various desserts was followed by a slice of wedding cake. Quite an unforgettable feast. Now, back home in California, its hiking and exercise time… and eating more sensibly. Have a good one, Nancy.

Hey Art – thanks for sharing your experience in Asbury Park, NJ. Sounds like quite the wedding!
Knowing that Bruce Springsteen played in Asbury Park, did you ever see him?

Out of the 80+ concerts groups that I’ve seen, he’s one that I missed.
