I so enjoyed my early morning walks in Northampton. There were so many interesting things to see. I’m glad I had my trusty phone with me so I could capture the sights.
With numerous great restaurants and shops in the downtown, there is very little space to sit and enjoy the downtown experience beyond a simple walk down the street. Enter, the Cracker Barrel Alley pedestrian experience. Here is a wonderful example of street art at its best. This alley has been converted into a space for community gathering will reinvigorate Downtown Northampton and create a sense of place and safety in the heart of Downtown.
There are other colorful scenes in Northampton. Here is a crosswalk. None of the boring green and white like the usual cross walks.
Here is a whimsical, yet serious frog sculpture. The plaque beneath Mr. Frog asks for donations to help feed the hungry in Northampton.
There was a calming water fountain, where someone had placed some flowers, probably as a memorial.
Speaking of memorials, this “ghost bicycle” commemorates someone who died. I’m sorry I didn’t stop and get the full story behind this. Judging by the fresh flowers placed next to the bike, this happened recently.
Even the metal railroad bridge had interesting street art.
Even though Northampton is a city, with a busy downtown, there are still places to enjoy nature. Here is a picture of Childs’ Park. This park was bequeathed to the city by Annie Childs in 1950. It provides a place to reflect and enjoy nature. It is 40 acres and includes two natural ponds. Unfortunately, Mr. Ken and I did not get a chance to enjoy this park because it was so beastly hot when we visited.
Northampton has been one of my favorite cities to visit. I can’t wait to go back. What is your favorite city?

Great fun to see your Northampton street scene photos, Nancy, and to join you on your walks. Lots of whimsical art and color, looks like some LGBT rainbows and such a beautiful park. Your photo of the park does look as hot as you say. Lovely photos.

Hi Jet,
Thanks for your comment. And yes, I believe the crosswalk was deliberately painted to honor LGBT. Northampton is a mecca for LGBT.
Hope your summer is going well.

I agree with my dear wife: Northampton is a fun place to visit and explore. The surrounding area is equally enjoyable, which I know Nancy will be discussing in a future blog post!

Hey Mr. Ken – thanks for stopping by my blog. I know you enjoyed our little trip too, but you were sorry that it was so hot so you couldn’t walk into downtown Northampton and buy a coffee and donut. 🙂
