New Jersey! Bet you never guessed that. Well Mr. Ken and I ventured outside our house and took a trip to Summit, New Jersey. Mr. Ken grew up in Summit and believe it or not, I was born in Summit. I also lived there for a few years. This is where I met Mr. Ken.
Bliss in a sandwich.
New Jersey is famous for many things, including sloppy joe sandwiches. This is not your typical sloppy joe though. A true New Jersey sloppy joe is always a double-decker thin sliced rye bread sandwich made with one or more types of sliced deli meat, such as turkey, ham, pastrami, corned beef, roast beef, or sliced beef tongue, along with Swiss cheese, coleslaw, and Russian dressing. I have never seen Mr. Ken so excited about a sandwich.
We went to the Millburn deli for this. I ordered a turkey sandwich (I’m not one for sloppy joes, New Jersey style or otherwise.) We then went to the Short Hills Mall to enjoy our lunch since it was too early to check in to our place.
The Short Hills Mall has always been upscale, but it is even more so now. Hah, I didn’t even recognize the names of the stores. And when looked inside these stores, there seemed to be shelves with one or two things on them. Me, I am used to the Macy’s way of displaying merchandise – crowded with lots of stuff.
I wanted to take a picture of dear Mr. Ken enjoying his sloppy joe, but he literally inhaled it before I got a chance.
Chillin’ with ice cream
It was hot in New Jersey, about 80 degrees. Coming from New England where we were lucky if it got to be 60, it was hard to get used to. What better way to cool down than with soft serve ice cream? We went to an old stand by that has been in Summit for years, Magic Fountain Ice Cream.
Chinese food – yum, yum

I’ll admit it, I am not much of a foodie, but I do love Chinese food. New Jersey has the best Chinese food; I have yet to find the equivalent in Massachusetts.
We topped off our first day by going to Hunan Spring, our favorite Chinese restaurant in Springfield, New Jersey. This restaurant has been around for over 35 years!
What better way to spend the first day of our vacation than eating? š
So what interesting meals have you had on vacation?

Hi, Nancy. I grew up in Newark and Plainfield, NJ, before moving to California after my 4 yrs of military service. Currently I have relatives living in Asbury Park and Piscataway. My mom introduced my brother and I to Chinese restaurants when we were very young. Today my favorite Chinese meal is shrimp chow fun (used to be shrimp with lobster sauce till a friend of mine treated my wife and I to a favorite eating place of his.) Have a wonderful day, Nancy.

Thanks for your comment Art! It’s funny, but it seems a lot of people grew up in New Jersey and then moved away.
I hope you are having a good Memorial Day weekend. We wanted to get out kayaking, but there are lots of thunderstorms forecasted.

Hi Nancy. Happy to read about your trip and especially your visit to Summit. My dad Carl owned The Towne Deli on the dead end by Kings. We made 1,000’s of those Sloppy Joes. I still do, lol. Enjoy the rest of your trip, stay safe and save some room! Marty P.

HI Marty,
Thanks for stopping by my blog. It is a small world, isn’t it?
As a matter of fact, Ken and I had some delicious sandwiches from your deli a few years ago when we visiting New Jersey. Of course, Ken had a Sloppy Joe and I had a turkey sandwich.

Hi Nancy. So, what are you two up to today? Rain is coming. I was wondering where you reside in Mass? Do you enjoy The Cape and all their delicious seafood?

Hey Marty,
It is humid and raining here in MA. We hope to get out kayaking tomorrow though.
Hah, as for the Cape, we haven’t been there for years. It has become way too built up for me. I have such fond memories of vacationing there as a child, but things have changed a lot.
I hope you are having a good Memorial Day Weekend.
