Okay, so social media is here to stay. But it seems it is degenerating into quick hits. A few recent experiences got me thinking about how little thought we put into what we say on social media.
1. Why connect.
I’m a big LinkedIn user, since it is more for professional use. I am always happy to connect with new and interesting people. I have noticed lately that people are just sending invites with the generic, “I’d like to be connected on LinkedIn.” I immediately delete these; if a person can’t even come up with a single reason why we should be connected, I don’t want to know them.
I also like Facebook for friends, family and exercise stuff. I am tired of people that I’m connected to asking me to “like” their pages, especially since they have not once commented on anything I’ve posted or ever interacted with me on Facebook. Why on earth would I want to “like” a page from a virtual stranger?
2. What you do with the connection.
The few times I have connected with strangers, whether on LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter, it seems I am subsequently inundated with sales pitches. No, I did not connect with you to hear about a product I could care less about. Instant unfriend or unfollow.
3. Watch what you say.
I’m all for freedom of speech. That is one of the things that makes America great. What I am not all for is politcal rants. This is also an automatic unfriend for me, especially since these have degenerated into rude hate speeches.
What about you? What are your pet peeves with social media?

I’m on LinkedIn just because it’s a business profile. I write blog-posts every so often, also to keep up an online… presence? I’m certainly not on Facebook, or any other social media and recent news have shown I was right to avoid them 🙂

Hi Bea,
Thanks for chiming in with your thoughts. You are quite right in that you aren’t missing anything by avoiding those other social media sites.
Nancy
P.S. Hope the snow has finally left Rome. We are still get flurries here; this is late, even for Massachusetts.

The snow was a fluke, but the effects were long-lasting – roads with thousands of potholes!

Hi Nancy. I’ve only chosen WordPress and have found that this is relatively friendly and polite, compared to what I hear of other forms of social media.I like how it has broadened my horizons. My wife Francis sometimes reads to me comments, or occasionally I’ve seen comments on News website, etc. that are incredibly caustic. She really likes Facebook, as you do, to keep in touch with family and friends. Social media is such a mix, with pros and cons. I like your 3 points. Good cheers and happy Eastertide.

Hi Bruce,
Thanks for your comment. Social media can be both good and bad. 🙂

P.S. Hope you and your family enjoyed a nice Easter. I am really looking forward to Spring, even though we are still getting snow flurries here!

I used to have issues with Facebook with so many ads and unwanted notifications. Now my aggravation is much less as FB did that “thing” they did to make it more family friendly and not bombard with unwanted people and spam. I see the same few people over and over now and want to adjust that for my larger audience and friend base but for now it’s pretty relaxing. Only folks I regularly conversed with are what I see. Sharing my blog on FB and having an Instagram account his increased my blog readers through hashtags in groups I care about. I’m a humor writer so I’ve found lots of fun writers through those hashtags. And dog lovers as well as I write often about dog silliness. I guess it’s all in how you use social media and block what you don’t want. It take some diligence but pays off for me. Thanks for writing this piece. It’s very thought provoking.

Hi Lisa,
Thanks so much for your comment. I am glad you found some social media that works for you.
Facebook can work for me sometimes since I find it a good way to stay in touch with close friends and family.
