Tips for watching the Super Bowl

Blah, blah, blah. I don’t like football. There is just something very weird about 300 pound men jumping on top of each other. And for this they get paid millions of dollars a year! I just don’t get it. This dates back to my junior high days when I was a cheerleader. We had a favorite cheer about, “first and ten, do it again!” Except, we weren’t exactly football experts and managed to yell that cheer even when the other team did the first and ten thing. Oops.

Boo hoo, the Patriots lost the Super Bowl. Even with the little I know about football, the Eagles were the better team and seemed to have it more together. Not exactly football-speak, but you get the picture. Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but I only watched the first half of the game. And even better, I only watched the commercials. I thought I had read that there would be a commercial about kittens playing with tiny little footballs. I will watch anything that involves cute little fuzzy animals. Is that a such a girl thing to say or what?

The Super Bowl is a cultural phenomenon. I suppose it’s worth watching just for that. I’m sure it was all folks will be talking about this week. Well, since I work from home, the only thing I would be talking to is my computer and that would be a little creepy.

This got me to thinking. I’m sure there are some people left in America who didn’t watch the game. But, no worries, here are some tips to get you through the next week. You can converse like a football pro!

1. The ads.

Google “super bowl ads” and you’ll find plenty of websites showing the ads. You can peruse these at your leisure, passing over those which don’t do anything for you. You can even watch the ads before the Super Bowl so you don’t have to sit through the football torture, er game. My favorite this year was Danny DeVito as the peanut M & M. Not exactly a kitten, but pretty funny.

2. The game.

Google “super bowl plays” and you get an earful and eyeful of the plays during the game. Can you say: “The Patriots had a weak defense and Belichik wasn’t on the top of his game?” Or even better, try saying with conviction: “Benching Butler was Belichik’s biggest mistake.” See it’s not that hard.

If you’re a guy, it’s okay to admit you don’t like football. You might even like cute kittens too!
