Nothing much on the blog front this week. I am busy getting my Mom’s house ready to be put on the market. The house is over 50 years old and it was well-maintained, but it does need some refreshing. We are removing the wallpaper and painting the walls. We are also pulling up the wall-to-wall carpet and refinishing the beautiful hardwood floors that are underneath.
I have “before” pictures, but they will be more dramatic if I show them alongside the “after” pictures. Hopefully next week I can do that.
My excitement for today was a trip to Home Depot for some flowers to brighten up the front steps at Mom’s house. Mr. Ken was very happy too since Home Depot is his second favorite store, next to Dunkin Donuts.
Also, I bought a new door mat for Mom’s house.
Boy, I really do need a life if the highlight of my day was a trip to Home Depot. 🙂

Hey Professor,
I am not surprised. After all, removing wallpaper isn’t a very professorish thing to do, now is it?
The good news about the wallpaper is that it came off really easily. All you had to do was pull at a loose end and the entire strip came off! I think that’s because the wallpaper is so old.

Hi Nancy, love this post. I know it can’t be easy selling your mother’s house but your love for her and sense of wanting to do the very best for what was hers shines through. xx

Hi Jean,
Thanks for your comment. I love how you have framed this, “wanting to do the very best for what was hers.” Thank you for that!

Nancy!
I put my grandparents house on the market last month. They bought it 92 years ago and I had an aunt (who I adored) who lived there for the last 40 years. I had the interior painted, took down the layers of window treatments, had the windows washed, and got rid of everything old that I knew my brothers and myself would not want. It makes all the difference in with world! I had 7 offers and no one wanted to tear down the house. The house is now under agreement I have to figure out what to do the furniture. I felt really good about the house and I am happy the house will go to a new family after so may years.
Good luck. It’s a lot of work but there is also something nice about closing a chapter and moving on.

Hi Richard,
Thanks so much for your comment. It is sad to be selling the house that I grew up in and the house where I have so many happy memories. But, you are right, that life is all about changes and it is good to move on.

Lovely to put flowers too – the future owners will treat the house with love and respect too, the nicer you get it looking before you let it go.
