Here we are ready to embark on our square dancing adventure:
Oh dear, I see we have turned into one of those couples that dresses alike and looks alike. π
We arrive at the hall and Mr. Ken goes straight towards the refreshments to check them out. He comes back with a big smile on his face; I guess that means they meet his approval.
The woman checking us in is very friendly. She asks if we have square danced before. I tell her that I did it back in high school and loved it. I think she thought that was a bit odd, but she nodded politely.
We are told to get into a big square with 3 other couples. The caller starts the class by saying: “Square dancing is pretty easy as long as you can count to four and you know your right from your left.”
I’m thinking: “Oh dear, I have a problem mixing up my right and left. It is so much of a problem that when I’m out driving with a friend, she knows to keep reminding me to go to the “real” right.”
We would learn a step, practice it and then learn another step. We learned:
do-si-do
swing
promenade
chain
go to center
circle around.
The do-si-do is by far my favorite step since all you have to do is walk around behind your partner. The other steps, like circle around, may sound simple, but they aren’t.
Mr. Ken and I only went the wrong direction a couple of times and the others’ quick feet saved us all from a major pile-up.
We danced for two hours! I was exhausted by the end of the night. And I thought I was in pretty good shape, but then again nothing prepares you for an activity like that activity.
Mr. Ken even enjoyed the class. So we will be back next week.
I even had fun taking pictures. I asked folks’ permission before I took their pictures and everyone was happy to have their picture taken!
Here’s the caller:
Below are some of the advanced folks dancing. Note the pretty ruffled skirts. I think I may just have to get me an official square dancing outfit!
There will be no pictures of Ken and Nancy square dancing for a LONG time. All you would see is two people, dressed alike and looking very confused. I think we’ll have to wait until we have “graduated” from our beginner square dancing. This won’t be until May.
So, all in all, a fun evening. You all should try square dancing! π

Hi Jean,
I am glad you enjoyed this. Now, if I were a bit more technically advanced, I could shoot a little video of the square dancing class!

It is a lot of fun and the other, more experienced dancers are very supportive (and patient). I must say that it is more strenuous than I expected. I’m beat by the end of the night!

Dear Mr. Ken,
You are doing so well with our do-si-doing! You haven’t yet stepped on my toes.
Now the fact that we have been going the opposite direction than everyone else in our square is another story!

Hi Tony,
Yes, it was a great time. If I posted current pictures, all you would see is two very confused people or a mass of people piled on top of each other since Ken and Nancy managed to go the wrong way in the square. π

The only time folks notice and compliment when we dress alike is when we hit a few stores for shopping just after our stretching classes– and we’re both still wearing our green Feeling Fit shirts. You both look like a really cool couple in your outfits.
