Before I begin this week’s post, I’d like to start with a little story. Way back in the days of high school, I didn’t like gym. Hard to believe that an exercise fanatic like me didn’t like gym, but there you are. I think it was because:
1. The dorky gym uniforms.
Can someone say bloomers?
There is nothing more to say about this article of clothing.
2. The time element.
Combine that fashion statement with the fact that we only had 10 minutes to shower and get back to class after gym and you have a recipe for a bad experience. What teenage girl can get dressed in that time? It takes one 10 minutes to figure out how she will style her hair.
There was one bright spot however and that was square dancing. Did I just say square dancing? Yes I did. I was the only one in my class of 600 who liked it. There was something about the 4 count and the peppy music that spoke to me.
Now flash forward 30+ years. I am out for my daily walk and I happen to walk by this sign:
How exciting! Sqaure dancing right in my own home town.
I spend time contemplating how I will get Mr. Ken to come with me to this. Plan A is to just ask. Plan B is to ask, then bribe with a promise of a free donut after class. My mother-in-law is a fabulous ballroom dancer. But, let’s just say that Mr. Ken did not inherit her dancing gene.
I get home and put Plan A into play. I am greeted with:
The first time I saw that look was in our wedding pictures. 🙂
Finally Mr. Ken speaks and “Sure, I’ll go.”
I had to shake my head to make sure I heard him correctly. Did he just say “yes?”
Wow, I didn’t even have to pay him with a donut.
Stay tuned for our first class. It isn’t until September 16.
Are there any other square dancing fans out there? I suspect this group is even smaller than the Peep or chipmunk fan group. 🙂

Hi Professor,
Well, if you say so. Funny thing about that gym outfit. I googled “gym bloomers” and was taken to a website titled, “Outfits of the 1950’s.” Well, I am old, but I am not THAT old. Ha ha.

Dear Miss Judi,
I think so. We just have to see how Mr. Ken likes it. 🙂

Hi dear Nancy,
Love Mr Ken’s eyes ! A definite “out of his comfort zone” expression. I have square danced in the past. It’s a bit like doing Sudoku on your feet. Have fun.

Dear friend Ralph,
Yes, it is quite out of Mr. Ken’s comfort zone.
Hah – I love your description of square dancing!

I had the same uniform except our uniform was a faded shade of orange. Gag! It was madness in the locker room and I had hair nearly to my behind. Yes, fun times 🙂

Hi Melody,
Oh my gosh, your gym uniforms sound even uglier than ours! Orange is a color that doesn’t look good on anyone, except a pumpkin.

You look cute in your blue gym uniform! Coming from PA we had our share of square dancing too. Probably the most dancing I did in school (sadly). Do-si-do

Hi Andy,
Thank goodness there are no live pictures of those gym days! At least there were no smartphones so no one was taking pictures. 🙂

Keep us posted on the dancing with the stars episode. Are you sure you didn’t promise Mr. Ken some donuts?

Hi Tony,
With Mr. Ken, I think the promise of donuts is always implied. 🙂

I have suggested that Nancy invest in a good pair of steel toed shoes to keep her toes safe while we dance! I see that there are some refreshments afterwards so I will be able to re-energize with some cookies, etc. If the refreshments are disappointing there is a nearby Dunkin Donuts as a backup!

Dear Mr. Ken,
I knew I wouldn’t be able to escape a donut outing after this! 🙂
