I attended one of my fun marketing seminars the other day. It was held in an office near the North End of Boston. It’s a cool place. As I was sitting in the conference room, I watched as the employees came into work.
This is what I saw:
Well maybe the employees weren’t quite this young, but they did look young. 🙂
I guess these guys live close enough to bike to work. How fun. Except, I would think they take their lives in their hands by biking in Boston. The drivers are crazy! At least if you’re in another car, you have some metal to protect you.
I blinked and saw this:
I had to blink again to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating. Did I just see a young woman walk by with a little dog on a leash?
I contrast this with the scene when I was working in an office.
My have times have changed. 🙂
I had to get pictures from the web to illustrate my points. I think if I jumped up from my seminar and started taking pictures, I would have had some strange looks thrown my way.
What is your office like?

My office is in my studio…so I’m usually left alone. Which is a pity! Looks like you have lots of opportunity to cause trouble!

Hey Professor,
It is a good thing that you are alone in your studio because I think you would cause a lot of trouble too! 🙂

Yes I believe you are right Nancy. The office setting has relaxed quite a bit from what it used to be when IBM made the tie and starched white shirts, and dress suits for women popular. Now it’s bring your dog to work or whatever makes you comfortable in a lot of offices. High walls with enclosed offices were the dominate office layout. Now the work place is more collaborative, open, and laid back. I suppose there might be something to a more relaxed atmosphere especially for the younger generation.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your comment. I smiled when I read your words about IBM. Way back when I graduated from college, I really wanted to work for IBM. I think the structured culture appealed to me. I ended up in Financial Services, which was also very conservative and very structured.

The workplace has changed a lot since my days. We used to have to wear a tie and jacket except when we had a casual day. I do believe that you tend to take the job a bit more serious when you have to dress up more. I think we’ve gone too much in the other direction and now people really look sloppy.

Hi Ken,
I know exactly what you mean. When I am dressed “up” for work, I am in a more serious frame of mind.
I had two sets of clothes, clothes for work and clothes for leisure. When I was dressed for work, I knew it was time to get serious and focus. When I was dressed for leisure, I knew it was time to relax.
The borders between work and leisure are no more, sadly. People are expected to be on call 24/7, no matter what their industry. I guess that’s one reason people like to dress casually for work.
I don’t subscribe to being “on” 24/7, everyone needs a break from work. Most of us aren’t doing life saving work that needs our attention 24/7.
