Or rather, a rant about 10 minutes. If you’ve read my blog posts, you know that I am obsessed, er interested, in fitness. I love to keep up with the latest trends. Well the latest fitness trend is for short workouts. Short, as in 10 minutes. I’m all for 10 minute breaks throughout the day. We all spend too much time sitting and we all could benefit with moving about more.
But, the trend I’m seeing is that these 10 minute workouts are the be-all and end-all. I’m sorry, there is just no way you can get fit in 10 minutes a day. On my crankier days, I see this as part of our culture of “wanting it now” and “wanting it to be easy.” If only there was a magic pill to make us fit. If you listen to some of the 10 minute workout claims, you would think that these fit the bill.
If you want to be fit and healthy, you HAVE to make it a priority in your life. I’ve read that most people spend 3 hours watching tv in the evenings. Although these days, it may be more like 6 hours in front of the computer. What if you took just one of those hours and decided to get up and move! Mmm, something to think about.
Okay rant over, back to sitting at my computer.
What do you think about the 10 minute trend?

Dear friend Ralph,
You sound just like my husband, the infamous Mr. Ken. He believes that walking from his car to the donut place counts as exercise. Even if it takes him less than 10 minutes. π

Hi Andy,
It takes me at least 10 minutes to get my body up and moving in the morning just to get downstairs, have my coffee and start my exercising. π

It’s so true…umm…what veggies are good to eat to build muscles? Or shouldn’t I worry about eating veggies?

Hey Professor,
You sound just like my husband, dear Mr. Ken. He is looking for any excuse not to eat healthy.
As for your question about eating vegetables to build muscles, you should eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit, veggies and unprocessed food. But you probably already knew that since you are a professor. π

Hey professor,
Yes, I am absolutely positive. Wishing for donuts doesn’t make them appear. π

I’ve had some of the same thoughts. However, 10 minutes IS better than nothing. It’s the equivalent of me telling myself when I’m injured/lazy/unmotivated from running, “Walking around the block is still better than doing nothing.” 10 minutes is a start, so hopefully some of those 10 minuters will start to feel better and extend their workouts. For me, there’s nothing like a good run, followed by yoga, to set the tone for the entire day.

HI,
Yes, I too, subscribe to telling myself, “I will do this exercise for 10 minutes and then if I want to stop, I will.” It never fails that I feel so good after 10 minutes, I keep going.
For me, there’s nothing like an intense cardio or weight session followed by yoga.
