We all need to recharge and relax. Even if you love what you do, you need a break. It’s wonderful to go to a different environment, but sometimes that’s just not possible. Relaxation can be a state of mind too.
I am not able to physically get away much these days, but I’ve managed to create a calm and soothing environment. How, you may ask? It’s all about the simplicity.
1. Beautiful scenery.
This Shiva Rea yoga DVD was filmed in Santorini, Greece. Just looking at the scenery is enough to completely relax me. I love yoga for how it calms my body and my mind. The beautiful blue sky and water is an added bonus.
2. Zen water bottle.
We all should be drinking lots of water every day. That’s not always easy. I love filling this bottle with lots of ice cubes and ice cold water. I sip it through out the day. It’s not that big, which initially bothered me. But, I figured out a way to make that a positive. When the bottle is empty, it’s a reminder to me to get up from my computer, go downstairs to the kitchen and refill it. I sit too long hunched over the computer and anything I can do to remind myself to get up and move is good.
I love the pale turquoise color too. It’s so restful. It makes me think of being at a spa. Ahhhhh.
3. Mount Washington rock.
This seemingly innocuous rock evokes so many happy memories and pleasant sensations. I found it in a sun drenched stream on Mount Washington. When I look at that rock, I can clearly see the sunlight streaming down and making the water sparkle. I can smell the pine trees and feel the forest calm.
So what about you? How do you create an oasis?
Photos are thanks to Mr. Ken, photographer extraordinaire.

Hey Professor,
Water is so important, yet it is easy to overlook it. I find that this attractive bottle helps me a lot.

Lovely, simple post, Nancy. Admiring the trees unfolding their leaves is one of my greatest pleasures,

You are so right! When circumstances prevent me from actually being able to physically get away, I listen to some old records of various nature sounds whichever my dear hubby bought me to relax when I was pregnant and stressed! I was immediately transported mentally to wherever I wanted to go! Isn’t it awesome to realize our minds and hearts can give us so much emotional support ? Loved your post!

I have recently returned to my vegetarian diet and meditation. I have considered trying yoga, but haven’t decided yet.

Hi,
Good for you for returning to some very healthy habits. Yoga is a perfect complement to a vegetarian diet and to meditation. Many yoga practices include short meditations as well.
Many yoga teachers are also vegetarians. I think that’s because yoga teaches you to be more mindful.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Meditative exercise water and rock, how very Zen that is. I worked for several years for a Japanese Corporation visiting Japan on numerous occassion, and was always keen to visit their temple gardens. My own office is in our garden and, as a rest from my computer screen, I am simply able to look up and see our acer and heather border. Water is from the glass and the rock forms an oriental garden lantern. All very relaxing to the sore eye and muddled brain. Thank you for your blog, it helped me appreciate more my fortunate work location.
