I am getting better at this mindfulness thing. Between my yoga, meditation and prayer, I am able to slow down sometimes. I still have a ways to go though.
Sundays are my day of rest. I like to sleep late and just relax. Although for me, sleeping late means getting up at 6 am instead of 4 am. This past Sunday, we decided to go to the 11 am formal church service. This is a lovely service, with organ music and the choir. It is quite uplifting. We planned to go out for brunch afterwards.
As soon as I woke up, I started worrying. Will I have time to do my exercise? When will I be able to shovel Mom’s driveway? Will the brunch place be crowded?
Calmness overtook me as soon as I was at church. The calmness stayed with me at the brunch place. Who would have thought there would be a little French bistro in our suburban town. White tablecloths and real silverware awaited us. I couldn’t help but think of the expression, “French women don’t get fat.” Why? Because they savour their food, they don’t rush and they don’t eat diet cr*p.
I enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee with real cream. I enjoyed a real egg omelet. (I usually order an egg white omelet cooked dry.) I sipped water between every bite. I pretended I was sitting in a street café in Paris.
I left the restaurant feeling totally relaxed and calm. I love this reminder to slow down.
What does it take for you to slow down and enjoy the day?

Remembering to slow down and be mindful is difficult for me as well. I go through phases when I’m able to pull it off for a few days, then something happens and life goes into overdrive once again. I suspect it’s the same for almost everyone.

Hi Angela,
Thanks for your comment. I have to keep reminding myself every day to slow down. One of these days it will sink in!

Dear Professor,
I can just imagine how the Professor calms himself down – with a text book perhaps?:

Nancy, when my 18 year old was two years old, she stopped her father in his tracks I was rushing around the house to get her ready for pre-school and get ready for work, ( I was a successful manager of a loan office) participated in quite a few things during the day, had a long schedule which would not get me home to around 9:00 or later quite often, but I had to hit my numbers which I always did. But as I was getting her ready and pushing her to hurry up, she said to me at the age of two what’s the rush? That stopped me because I realized me running around would not get things done faster or even get me to work faster. That day I thought about what she said, and begin to rearrange what I would do each day not losing my mind trying to accomplish it. I even gave myself three half hours a day in my office time to do something that had nothing to do with work. I found more creative ways to motivate my team, so they could enjoy what they were doing and also actually save time so all could be home with their families earlier. We always say that life is too short to waste time. But rushing will slow down your life and make you more exhausted, spiritually and mentally! I became more effective, my team did, and my daughter did also because I spent more time with her when she was getting ready, when she got home from school, and I would even stop by her preschool and eat lunch with her three times a week. By slowing down I became much more effective and less tired. The numbers improved. We have to share ourselves, but we also have to share ourselves with ourselves, and take time/make time to smell the roses. Step away from being part of the rat race that goes on in our lives…it can cause physical and mental problems! Take and make time to enjoy yourself. You will become more effective in every relationship in your life, whether, family, church, work, and other activities. Since that day she spoke to me, my life changed, never overweight again, never tired. I found that many of the activities I participated in, if I missed them once or more a month they continued well without me. My energy levels were high, and I enjoyed my life more, able to share and lead more. I don’t know if I made much sense, but sometimes the things we rush to do, we need to step away from sometimes and find reasons to enjoy life more. That is called stealing away time! If you love yourself you will make time for yourself to enjoy life. I love your post and in the Lord love you my sister. Have a wonderful and blessed day tomorrow and enjoy your life!!!!

Hi dear brother Wendell,
Thank you so much for sharing that beautiful story about your daughter. Sometimes the simplest questions cause us to really stop and think.
I have to keep reminding myself to slow down too. I am caring for my dear 91 year old mother. Needless to say, she doesn’t move too fast and I find myself hurrying her along. I have to pause, take a deep breath and say, (like your daughter did), “what’s the rush?”
I have found that when I slow down and enjoy life, I am a better daughter, wife and worker.
May you have a wonderful week!

Hi,
Thanks so much for your kind comments. Sorry about not being able to comment on my older posts. I must have turned off comments for the older posts to stop spammers from having a field day. I will revisit that.
