So I know you’ve all been sitting at the edge of your seats, wondering what that picture was that I posted last week. First though, let me tell you a story.
Once upon a time there was computer nerd. He loved computers more than anything. Well, maybe not more than his car or his wife. His wife wanted a new computer so she asked her adorable nerdy husband what kind she should get. She’s thinking he’ll mention a brand name; we’ll then go the store or order it online. Instead, his eyes light up and he says, “I’ll build you a computer.” Um, okay but isn’t it easier to just buy it at the store? HINT: Never ask a computer nerd if it’s easier to buy something. The answer is always no, followed by a long technical explanation of why. I honestly thought he had started speaking a foreign language.
So the project begins. Mr. Ken sits hunched over his computer, mumbling to himself about motherboards and processors. A few days go by, I ask him if he has ordered all the parts. He looks at me as though I had just asked him to jump out the window. His reply, “These things take time. I need to find out from PC forums the best parts to buy.”
A week goes by and daily, boxes start arriving from UPS. Mr. Ken is like a kid at Christmas, exclaiming with joy over each box. He says: “Oh good, the Asus PB785 has arrived!” and “The Vertex DDR3 will be tough to put in, so I’d better get cracking on the instructions.”
Mr. Ken proudly shows me the turquoise thingie with a clip. He asks me to guess what that is. Mmm, it looks sort of like a telephone cord but I don’t think my computer will have a telephone built in, will it? No, this thingie is a “anti-static wrist strap.” I bet you didn’t know that computer parts are very sensitive to static and will self-destruct if exposed to it. Any techie worth his salt HAS to have one of these.
All the pieces are in the computer case. I ask Mr. Ken if my computer is ready. Once again I get the “look” and he says, “oh no, I have to install the BIOS.”
Well, finally the big day is here. Presenting: Nancy’s cool new computer!
No thought-provoking questions this week. Except maybe one on “what have you built lately?”
P.S. I asked Mr. Ken to wear his pocket proctector to make the picture more realistic, but he declined, saying it would clash with the turquoise anti-static wrist strap. 🙂
P.S.2 If you’re wondering what life is like with a car guy, you might want to check out this post:

Wow, having a computer built for you is fantastic! I have heard of the static when building a computer, but i’ve never seen one of the straps! Thanks for sharing.
How is your new computer doing? Are you enjoying it?
Many blessings to you both! 🙂

Dear friend Steve,
So far so good with the new computer. Of course, I haven’t had much chance to use the computer since Mr. Ken is still tweaking it. Or so he claims. I think he just likes using my cool new computer. 🙂

I definately do not fit the description of computer nerd, only recently having had the quill pen wrenched from my grasp and being sat down in front of a computer and told how to switch it on in four easy lessons.
My construction projects in recent years have mainly been of the plot variety, in the form of thrillers. ‘A Cast of Hawks’ and the sequel ‘Batsu’ are published and the manuscript of ‘Shadows in Sunshine’ is nearing completion. So you see I have not exactly been idle.
Returning to computers however, a look at the photograph has me applauding your work Mr Ken, I wish I had your skills.

Hey Richard,
I’m glad that you have a had a productive few years. As for me, I don’t think I’ve build anything, well except for my blog. If I were locked in a room with all the computer parts and told that I couldn’t leave the room until the computer was built, I would be in that room for the rest of my life!

Hi Ralph
Yes, dear Mr.Ken is pretty talented. As for jumping out of Windows, I would never know because he usually worked on the computer late at night when I was in bed fast asleep.

I would like to build my own however It would be obsolete before I got it into the case.
I did build a car 1929 Mercedes Replicar had a lot of fun but also headaches getting it registered with motor Vehicles ,, I was next going to build a Ultra Light Airplane BUT after reading an article about a retired fellow spending 5 years plus many dollars. Also not telling his wife of the Maiden flight ,,he crashed nto the trees not too far from here and was killed . That ended my Sight on Flight ,, at least with a car you can pull over to the side of the road
but with a plane n there are no clouds to park on.
WOOPIE leaving for Florida next week

Hey Uncle Bill,
Thanks for your comment. I agree that it’s better to leave building cars and airplanes to the experts. After all, if you put something in wrong, there are dire consequences. At least with a computer, all that may happen is that the screen goes black.
Have fun in Florida! I am so jealous. We’re in the middle of an arctic air mass. We even had a little bit of snow earlier this week!

Well Mr. Ken,
The BIG question is: “will you really hand it over to your dear wife, or will you have to keep tweaking it? And use this as an excuse to hang on the computer for your own use.”

Only thing that would have been cooler is if he had built it INTO the nice desk instead of a tower! Nice job though. Running linux, right? That would complete the geek factor.

Hi Don,
Actually, Mr. Ken did assemble the desk the computer is on. That was a few years ago though.
As for Linux, I’ll have to ask the resident geek. Except right now, he is under the computer desk looking at the Windows product key. Don’t ask why. 😉

Don, I’m not ready to jump into the Linux world quite yet. I’m using Windows 8.1 as you probably can tell from the screen image on the monitor. It seems fine for Nancy’s needs and is definitely fast. On the technical side, I did install an SSD for the hard drive and boy does that make things run fast! I’d recommend everyone upgrading to an SSD if they can do it. Thanks for you comment Don!
