I’ve been reading a lot about happiness and what makes some people happy and others not. It’s all about how you view your circumstances. I also believe that things happen for a reason.
So I have been having some stomach issues, which meant I have to eat a very bland diet. This also meant no coffee. Ack! When one gets up at 4 am, one definitely needs something to get going. I could choose to be really annoyed about this, but I chose instead to find an alternative. Tea!
I’ll admit it, I dislike the taste of green tea. I know it’s supposed to be so healthy for you, blah, blah, blah. But it’s antioxidant, super-duper powers are only good if you don’t add anything to it. So much for disguising the taste with cream and sugar. I can’t face yucky green tea at 4 am.
Enter Upton Tea Imports. My dear brother-in-law, who is my husband Ken’s identical twin, introduced us to the real joy of tea. This company has every imaginable type of tea.
Ken and I had a blast figuring out what to order.
Here’s what came for us:
We ordered:
(these are all loose leaf teas)
Green Rooibos – from South Africa
Masala Chai – black tea with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and cloves from India
Peach with Flowers – black tea with marigold flowers and peach flavor from Germany.
As a nice surprise, we also got a sample of:
Shou Mei White tea – from China.
It was as though we took a trip around the world!
Upton Tea Imports provided a wonderful experience from the start. They personify tea! We ordered on a Friday and our order arrived on Monday. The tea came beautifully packaged in thick silver bags. It was even personalized with our names!
We also got a thick tea catalog and some tea strainers so we could make our tea. It was like having Christmas in July!
To top it off we’ll be using a French press to make the tea.
The things I have learned from this experience:
1. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
There is always an alternative. Instead of coffee, which I have lost my taste for, I’ve now become a tea fan.
2. Caffeine isn’t what gets me up and going in the morning.
I do need a little bit, even though I’m a morning person and I love getting up early to exercise. But, I think it’s more the act of drinking a delicious beverage in the morning that wakes me up, not the caffeine.
I made the mistake of having an iced coffee when out with my Mom. BIG mistake. I felt jittery all day and didn’t sleep well. I felt as though my nervous system was all out of whack.
3. Slow down and enjoy life.
I used to stumble out of bed at 4 am, drag myself downstairs and put the coffee (made the day before) into the microwave, anxiously waiting for it to heat up so I could drink it and wake up.
Now, I enjoy every step of making tea. I decide which tea to try that day; it’s so much fun to have a few choices. I carefully scoop out a bit of the tea for the strainer. You really got to go slow with this, or you’ll end up with tea all over the floor!
I savour the tea. Once you’ve tried real tea, you’ll never go back to Lipton’s.
4. Learn to relax more.
The other day was one of those days, very stressful. I came home, saw the Upton Tea catalog sitting on the counter and decided to spend some time perusing it. I got lost in imagining a tea plantation in India or Ceylon. I have no idea where Ceylon is, but it sure sounds exotic, doesn’t it?
I made a mental note to look up where Ceylon is located and to learn more about the different types of teas. I love learning new things. It’s relaxing and energizing at the same time.
After spending a half hour with the tea catalog, I was completely relaxed. I’m busy planning what I’ll order next.
So what about you? How do you enjoy life?

Hey Professor,
Up until a few days ago, I wouldn’t have been aware of red tea from Africa, but thanks to the Upton Tea Imports catalog, I know all about that tea. 🙂

Hi,
I just took a look at it and I am soooo tempted to order more tea. I see they have free shipping for orders over $100.00. I am such a sucker for free shipping, I always make sure my order is at least the minimum for free shipping.
The only advantage of Upton Tea Imports is that it is here in Masssachusetts. I like to support local businesses.
Of course, with so many varieties of tea, I could order from both places. : 0

Hi,
Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but I’m not a big football fan, Patriots or not. I just don’t see the point of giant grown men jumping on top of each other.
Go Red Sox though 🙂

Hi again,
On a separate note, I was studying the benefits of rooibos tea. I didn’t realize that it was also known as red tea, your favorite! We have been making iced tea from this and just love it.
I also love it when I learn something new. 🙂

I have never been a fan of tea or coffee for that matter, but have definitely noticed others’ love for these beverages. I think it is more psychosomatic then actually effective. I generally do not have issues getting up in the morning unless I get less than 5 hours of sleep. I personally love to drink a glass of cranberry juice.

Hi,
Thanks for your comment. I now agree with you on the psychosomatic thing about caffeine. I hope to totally get off caffeine soon.

P.S. I’m trying to get away from drinking caffeine. I figure going with tea is a way to start having less caffeine. I’m not so sure I can ever get completely away from it though, since I get up so early. 🙂

I, too, love Upton’s! Going through a new catalog is like Christmas. I do like green tea, but not anything vegetal tasting. Upton’s has a few really fine ones, including Organic Young Hyson. I have some stomach issues too, and recently decided to only drink decaffinated tea for awhile and switched to Bigelow green tea bags. It has no flavor! Nope. Nada. No way! Back to Upton.

Hi Sherry,
Thanks for your comment. Thanks, too, for the info about the green tea from Upton Tea Imports. I was drinking green tea from Costco, which also doesn’t have much flavor.
Someday, if I’m feeling brave, I’ll order some green tea from Upton’s. I may start with a sampler.
Going through their catalog is so much fun; I’ve already chosen about 10 more teas that I’d love to try!

been drinking tea every morning since I was about 18 months old. cannot live without it. Have you ever sat through a traditional Chinese tea ceremony? Like nothing you’ve ever seen. they take their tea very seriously and have a brew for everything from poison ivy to intimacy. LMA

I used to think I hated green tee, too, until I tried Upton’s Earl Grey green tea – I especially love making iced tea from it. I drink it instead of soda.
I love Upton’s – I tell all my friends about it.

Hi,
That’s too funny. It reminds me of my latest favorite series on Netflix, “Midsomer Murders.” This takes place in England and I think that all English folks must drink tea all the time. It’s funny to see the characters go to coffee shops and order coffee instead. 🙂

Nancy, I’m not at all a fan of Rooibos tea, but I am a devout tea drinker. It may seem boring, by my favorite is Salada 100% Pure White Tea. White tea is supposedly even more healthy for you than green tea, but is has a much more mellow flavor. I drink it black – er, white – sans milk/cream or any kind of sweetener. It’s wonderful!
BTW, I’m also up at 4:00 a.m., and I must begin my day with a large mug of French roast coffee. Thereafter, it’s tea all day.

Hi Steve,
I’ve just started getting into white tea. Since I don’t like green tea, I was hoping white tea would taste better. Plus, as you said, it’s even better for you. Luckily, Upton Tea Imports sent me a sample of white tea.
I can understand why you’d need a large mug of coffee, getting up at 4 am. I love the early morning, but it’s hard to get up and going sometimes.

I’m glad you’re coming around to the tea situation… I personally love tea – but more than that, I think finding ways to relax and look at situations differently is what it’s all about (it’s why I blog). When I’m stressed out, I usually make a bubble bath and take the tea into the bathtub. It does wonders!
