So last week I had a creative block, in spite of having a fun and engaging week. Well, it happens. The easy way out would be just skip my blog post for the week, but I really wanted to keep up the momentum of weekly posts.
As I was struggling to finalize last week’s post on “What’s new in marketing?” I had the brainstorm to also write a post on what happens when I write a blog post. So here goes.
I tried the old, “just sit and start writing.” I kept perusing the Internet and ended up buying Shaun T.’s new Focus T25 Insanity Series.
I tried bribing myself, “if you write a draft, you can go for a walk afterwards.” The temperatures last week were in the 90’s so I wasn’t too excited about my reward. Scratch that.
I tried just sitting at my computer and thinking. I kept getting up to check to see if the mail had been delivered. I had a field day with the latest version of the Amazon Vine newsletter and ordered a boatload of new books. It’s only 10 am and the mail doesn’t usually come until 3 pm, but you never know.
Think marketing, think marketing. Okay, I got the title, “What’s new in marketing?” I should add a quick paragraph about the Hubspot Inbound Marketing Conference in August and the 10% off (with code IH033). Now what do I say in between?
I worried that I was sitting too much. After all, the latest health research shows it’s good to get up and move around every hour or so. So now it’s time to run downstairs and check up on our chipmunks. If they’re out and about, I really need to feed them.
Finally, inspiration came as I was eating my lunch. That day it was low-fat cottage cheese and fruit. After I got over wishing I also had a Dairy Queen Mocha Chip Blizzard to top off my lunch, the blog post started coming together.
It’s funny how we can’t force ideas to come, they arrive in our minds when they arrive. And for me, it’s usually when my mind is at rest and I’m doing something else.
So what about you? How do you write your blog posts?

I find my inspiration comes within 2 minutes of my head hitting my pillow at night and I review my day or preview tomorrow. And then I am up and down, up and down jogging down notes. An idea for you in Marketing, our marketing prof had a fifth ‘P’ in Marketing…Phantasy. How is Marketing handling the fifth P nowadays? Have a great holiday…take the day off 🙂

That’s hilarious! Sometimes it’s so hard to get that mental thing going! When I get it…push-up time! Punishment maybe?

Hi Professor!
Thanks so much for your comment. I hear you about the push-ups. Even though they are supposed to be one of the best exercises out there, I hate them.
Keep on blogging 🙂

I currently have about a hundred and eighty nine (189) unedited and unpublished blog post in my wordpress. Every idea is a potential post for me, so I write it down even if it is just one line. For me, inspiration to write comes unannounced, doesn’t matter where I am or what I am doing – an idea is an idea that is worth exploring.
Awesome post!

Hi Walter,
So you will always have something to blog about! I find that when I do a draft, leave it for a few days and come back to it, I usually don’t make too many changes. Stream of consciousness writing is the trick for me.

I think that it might be good to write a post JUST about your chipmunks! After all, they are quite a bunch of characters! 🙂

Hi Ken,
I could write a bunch of posts about our dear little friends. I’m not so sure that everyone would want to read that much about them. 🙂

I have a morning routine and a process when i need to inspire/motivate myself during work. Each of these tend to generate ideas for posts. It’s a lot easier i think given my content to smash through a dry patch. I find that as long as i have something to write on, i can get it down quick and elaborate on it at home. Happens at the worst of times tho. i’ve made a lot of voice notes while driving, haha!

Hi,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on how you write blog posts. Sometimes I get great ideas in the middle of the night, but I neglect to write them down. Of course, I forget them by the time I wake up. 🙂

If I’m dragging my feet, I bribe myself with chocolate brownies. But sometimes the ideas just don’t come, so I just wait it out, though it’s frustrating.

Hi there,
Mmmm, I like the idea of a chocolate brownie. I think I would be more focused on the brownie than on my blog post though. 🙂

I don’t know about blog posts, but I have that issue when I write sometimes. I can usually think of everything that I could be doing (rearranging a bookshelf, grocery shopping, making a second [third, fourth, …] glass of whiskey, etc.,). I generally just have to buckle down and remember that I love what I am doing and clear my mind.

Hi Nancy,
I like to keep my posts raw with no tweaking, keeping them reasonably short and to the point. I can’t read long posts or single photograph ones and I would never write the same. Once, as an experiment I posted nothing and got loads of comments. I am not a post a day guy, just post when I have something meaty to say.
Keep posting Nancy. I enjoy your thoughts. Ralph xox 😀

My cell phone has totally changed the way I remember things. Cell phone notes for to do lists, movies I want to see, books I want to read, a quote I want to remember., Pictures of recipes rather than taking recipe book to the grocery store. I haven’t added a note for a blog post yet, but your post reminds me that’s a great idea too. When I started blogging, I thought it would be easy to sit down with a cup of coffee and add something to my blog each day. Not as easy as I thought!
