How many times do we miss opportunities because of preconceived notions?
If you’ve been reading my blog, you know I love exercise. A recent experience made me think twice about my assumptions. I learned some valuable lessons. I just love it when exercise teaches me about life.
Because of my ongoing hip problems, I am looking for exercise that is tough, but not that intense. I was thinking that extreme cardio is out.
A dear friend sent me an extra copy of Beachbody’s Insanity: The Asylum Volume 2 workouts. As you can well imagine from the name, these are some tough workouts! I was afraid to try them. Mostly becasue I thought I would get depressed and discouraged since I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the moves. As an advanced and fit exerciser, this was upsetting to me.
Well, one day I was feeling extra energetic and decided to try one of the workouts. All I can say is that I’m hooked! I hadn’t realized how much I missed that endorphin high. I love the instructor Shaun T. and I love intense cardio. So what if I couldn’t keep up with the cast? My heart rate was way up there and I got a great workout.
So much so, that I went ahead and ordered Insanity and Insanity: The Asylum 1. I’m definitely a Shaun T. fan now.
Lessons learned from this:
1. Sometimes you just have to go for it. You never know where an action will lead you.
2. Lose the preconceived notions and go in with an open mind.
3. Have fun!
What about you? What can you do to just try it and see?
P.S. These lessons don’t mean that I will ever attempt rock climbing, the activity shown in the picture. I am deathly afraid of heights, so this is not something that would be good for me. 🙂

Pre-conceived ideas ruin a lot of situations. We are best off when we go in with an open mind.

Great post. I discovered that almost all the things that I had worried about never came true.! I am afraid of heights too, that’s why I am considering to do sky diving and challenge the status quo (what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger) ;p

Hi Stan,
Good for you for conquering your fear of heights. I think if I tried to do something like skydiving or rock climbing, I would ‘die’ of a fright. Well, maybe not, but I don’t want to take the chance.
I will stick to jumping up and down on the ground ala Insanity and Asylum workouts. 🙂

Nice post Nancy! Your blog illustrates that, in most cases, it is your attitude that matters most in determining how successful you are.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for your comment. We can’t control what happens to us, but we CAN control how we view a situation.

Hi Nancy,
I am loving your blogs, very simple and to the point. I wish I can harness this writing skill 😛
Coming to the point, I think we need to learn from children, children teaches us rather than we teach them. I am an active supporter of this point of view.
Children take the risk, which we adult fear, they take the risk to get what they want, we don’t. When they take it and achieve it, they move one step further and further, and that makes us happy and proud, whereas we are like back bencer, watching a game of sports on television or in stadium and saying wow what a player or he / she should have done this.
Infact, in reality we all have this power inside us to do it. I was reading one book from a scholar, he said a very beautiful thing about people who don’t pray. He said, the power inside you with which you says, that you cannot pray, this same power is inside you which say you can!!!
P.S: I am also afraid of heights, but I love to do mountain climbing, sky diving and do macho man stuff 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hi Seedaalitalpur,
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment. I agree with you that children can teach us a lot. I see it everyday with my neighbor’s children. All I have to do is watch them playing and I can’t help but smile.
Writing is a skill that I believe anyone can develop. All it takes is persistence and practice.
Very interesting point about prayer. I am a deely religious and spiritual person and prayer is an integral part of my life. I also firmly support a person’s right to believe (or not believe) in what they want. I love how you describe prayer.
Good luck to you.
